Chicago Bulls
Team of Note
1966-1967 Chicago Bulls
Record: 33-48Overall ranking: 861st, 3.334 points below average
The Chicago Bulls earned two distinctions during their expansion season.
The Bulls set a record for most wins in a season for a post-1960 expansion team with a 33-48 ledger.
Chicago also stands as the only post-1960 expansion team to qualify for the playoffs in its inaugural season.
The Bulls did benefit from two strokes of good fortune.
The NBA used an expanded playoff format that allowed eight of the league’s 10 teams – a record 80 percent -- to qualify for the postseason.
Chicago also got to play in a weak Western Division. The San Francisco Warriors won the division with a so-so 44-37 record. No other team in the division finished above .500. The Bulls qualified for the postseason by finishing ahead of a Detroit Pistons team that went 30-51.
Guy Rodgers averaged 18.0 points and led the league in assists to lead the Baby Bulls. Rodgers also led the league in assists with the San Francisco Warriors during the 1962-1963 season. He was the only guard other than Oscar Robertson to win an assist title during the 1960s.
Bulls coach Johnny “Red” Kerr received the league’s Coach of the Year honor.
