Los Angeles Clippers
Team of Note
2005-2006 Los Angeles Clippers
Record: 47-35Overall ranking: 405th, 1.723 points above average
Appropriately, a defeat served as the defining moment for the most successful season in the Los Angeles Clipper franchise’s California history.
The Clippers lost 101-95 at Memphis in the next-to-last game of the 2005-2006 season. The win gave the Grizzlies a “reward” in the form of the No. 5 seed for the Western Conference playoffs — and a first-round playoff matchup against the powerful Dallas Mavericks. Memphis lost the series against the eventual Western Conference champions in four games.
Los Angeles “fell” to the No. 6 seed – and a first-round playoff matchup against the less-imposing Denver Nuggets. Denver held the No. 3 seed as the Northwest Division champion. But the Clippers got home court advantage for the series because of a superior regular season record.
The Clippers used that home court advantage to beat the Nuggets in a pair of close games to start the postseason. Los Angeles went on to win the series in five games for the first playoff series victory in the franchise’s California history.
The Clippers gave their long-suffering fans several other reasons to cheer during the 2005-2006 season.
Los Angeles won 47 games, the most in the franchise’s West Coast history. The Clippers posted an average point differential of +1.6 points per game – hardly imposing, but the best mark of the team’s time in California.
Power forward Elton Brand averaged a career-best 24.7 points per game and made the All-Star team. Veteran point guard Sam Cassell joined the Clippers as a free agent and provided the team a winning mindset, along with 17.2 points and 6.3 assists per game.
Los Angeles’ season ended with — as usual — a loss. But not before the Clippers pushed the Phoenix Suns to seven games in the West semifinals.
