Seattle Supersonics
Team of Note
1978-1979 Seattle Supersonics
Record: 52-30Overall ranking: 292nd, 2.696 points above average
The 1978-1979 Seattle Supersonics achieved a place in history in 1979 when they defeated the Washington Bullets in five games in the NBA Finals to win the franchise’s first and only championship.
The 1978-1979 Sonics since have settled into another niche in history: They are the only team to win an NBA championship without a Hall of Fame player or a likely Hall of Fame player on the roster.
Seattle coach Lenny Wilkens has earned Hall of Fame enshrinement as a player and as a coach, but none of the Sonics’ top players – Gus Williams, Dennis Johnson and Jack Sikma – have gained induction. Most likely, none ever will.
Of the NBA’s recent champions, only the 2003-2004 Detroit Pistons appear to have a chance to match the 1978-1979 Sonics’ “accomplishment.”
