Washington Wizards
Team of Note
1977-1978 Washington Bullets
Record: 44-38Overall ranking: 488th, 0.818 points above average
The Bullets enjoyed success throughout the 1970s, but they rose up and claimed the franchise’s only NBA title when most least expected it.
Washington won the 1977-1978 NBA championship despite a 44-38 record during the regular season. The Bullets still hold the “record” for worst regular season winning percentage for an NBA champion.
Washington needed time to gel because of injuries and new personnel. But the Bullets started finding their range just in time for the postseason.
Washington cruised through the Eastern Conference playoffs. The Bullets won all three of their pre-Finals series without facing an elimination game. They rallied from a 3-2 deficit to win the NBA Finals in seven games over the Seattle Supersonics.
